Terms of Membership and Terms of Use

Effective: 11 August 2026Last updated: 11 August 2026Version: 1.0

Introduction

These terms govern your use of the 5 and 20 Buddy Buddy platform ("the Platform"), operated by Gaskell Enterprises, trading as Vision, Support and Challenge Publishing (VSC Publishing). By creating an account or using the Platform, you agree to these terms.

These terms were last updated on 11 August 2026. We may change them as set out in the Changes to terms section below.

Eligibility

You must be 18 or older to create an account. The Platform is designed for veterans, serving military personnel, emergency services workers, and their families and supporters. If you are not part of this community but wish to use the Platform for peer support and self-development, you may do so, provided you respect the purpose of the community.

Account creation and security

  • You must provide accurate and truthful information when creating your account.
  • You are responsible for keeping your password secure and for all activity under your account.
  • You must not share your account with anyone else or allow anyone else to use your account.
  • You can change your password and manage your account from the Account page.
  • Tell us immediately if you think your account has been compromised, using the Contact page.

Membership licence

We grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable licence to use the Platform for personal, non-commercial peer support and self-development. You do not acquire any ownership rights in the Platform or its content.

Membership fees

The Platform is currently free to use. No membership fee, subscription, or recurring payment is charged. If we introduce paid features in the future, we will update these terms and the Cancellation and Refund Policy, and give you notice before any charge is applied. No charge will be made without your explicit agreement.

Member responsibilities

  • Use the Platform honestly and in good faith.
  • Keep your information accurate and up to date.
  • Respect the privacy of other members. Do not share private conversations, screenshots, or personal information outside the Platform.
  • Do not use the Platform to replace professional or clinical care for yourself or others.
  • Follow our Community Guidelines at all times.

Member-generated content

You retain ownership of the content you post (self-check answers, workbook entries, chat messages). By posting content on the Platform, you grant us a non-exclusive, royalty-free, worldwide licence to host, store, display, and transmit that content for the purpose of operating the Platform and providing the service to you and your group members. This licence ends when you or we delete the content.

You warrant that any content you post is lawful and does not infringe anyone else's rights. You are solely responsible for your content.

Private messaging and group chat

Group chat messages are visible to members of your group. Messages are not end-to-end encrypted. The platform admin and hosting infrastructure have technical access to message content for moderation, safety, and legal compliance. Do not share information in group chat that you would not want a platform administrator to see in the course of their duties.

You can report any message or member using the reporting tools described in our Online Safety and Reporting Policy.

Prohibited use

You must not:

  • Use the Platform for any illegal purpose.
  • Harass, threaten, abuse, or intimidate any person.
  • Share content that is hateful, discriminatory, or that promotes violence or self-harm.
  • Impersonate another person or misrepresent your identity or service status.
  • Share another member's private information without consent.
  • Attempt to gain unauthorised access to the Platform, other accounts, or our systems.
  • Use the Platform for unsolicited commercial messaging.
  • Introduce malware, viruses, or other malicious code.
  • Share or distribute content from private groups without the consent of all members.

See our Community Guidelines for full details.

Suspension and termination

We may suspend or terminate your account if you breach these terms, our Community Guidelines, or if we believe your conduct poses a risk to other members or the Platform. We will tell you why, unless telling you would prejudice an investigation or breach a legal obligation.

You can terminate your account at any time from the Account page. On termination, your access ends and your data is deleted as set out in our Privacy Notice.

Intellectual property

The Platform, its design, the workbook content, and the book excerpts are owned by Steve Gaskell and Vision, Support & Challenge Publishing. The books "5 and 20: Buddy Buddy" and "Last Parade" are protected by copyright. You may not copy, reproduce, or distribute Platform content or book content without written permission.

Platform availability

We do not guarantee uninterrupted access to the Platform. We may suspend access for maintenance, updates, or security reasons. We are not liable for any loss arising from temporary unavailability.

Changes to services and terms

We may update the Platform and these terms from time to time. For significant changes to terms, we will notify you in the app or by email before the change takes effect. Continued use after the effective date constitutes acceptance of the updated terms.

Liability

The Platform provides peer-support and self-development tools. It is not a clinical, medical, or emergency service. We do not accept liability for any decision made or action taken based on Platform content. If you are in crisis, contact emergency services or a crisis line — do not rely on this Platform.

Nothing in these terms excludes or limits our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud, or for any other liability that cannot be excluded or limited under UK law.

To the extent permitted by law, our total liability for any claim arising from your use of the Platform is limited to £100.

Consumer statutory rights

Nothing in these terms affects your statutory rights as a consumer under UK law, including rights under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 and the Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013. These terms do not exclude or restrict any statutory right that cannot be excluded or restricted.

Cooling-off rights

Because the Platform is currently free, the consumer cancellation right under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013 does not apply to membership itself. If paid features are introduced, you will have the statutory 14-day cooling-off right from the start of any paid subscription, as set out in the Cancellation and Refund Policy.

Complaints

If you have a complaint about the Platform, contact us via the Contact page. We aim to respond within 5 working days. If you are not satisfied with our response, you may refer your complaint to the relevant authority, including the ICO for data protection matters or your local Trading Standards for consumer matters.

Governing law and jurisdiction

These terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales. Any dispute arising from these terms or your use of the Platform shall be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of England and Wales, except that you may bring proceedings in the courts of the part of the UK where you live if you are a consumer.
